From an Easter concert to Querubim Lapa’s centenary exhibition, the Verão Azul Festival, and vibrant photography showcases – April in the Algarve is alive with art and creativity
Portimão honours the late Querubim Lapa
The painting and ceramic works of Portimão artist Querubim Lapa (1925-2016) will be on display at the Portimão Museum until April 27.
Lapa, who earned his place in the modern art scene in Portugal and stood out in Neorealism, is today considered one of the most important Portuguese ceramicists of the 20th century.

Querubim Lapa
To mark the centenary of his birth, his hometown has decided to honour him with this exhibition, the largest of the artist’s anthologies to date and the first to present his painting and ceramics works together, which includes 94 pieces.
Easter concerto
To celebrate Easter this year, the Algarve Orchestra is performing Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626.

In addition to the Algarve Orchestra Community Choir, the show will also feature four guest soloists (soprano Sofia Marafona, mezzo-soprano Mariana de Sousa, tenor Leonel Pinheiro and baritone André Henriques), and will be conducted by Pedro Neves, the current Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.
The concerto will be held on April 19 at Portimão’s TEMPO Theatre at 9pm. Tickets cost €10.
Verão Azul Festival
The Verão Azul Festival is back to the Algarve for another edition full of talent.
This year, from April 10 to 19, the festival brings an eclectic mix of performing arts, music, film, and immersive experiences, transforming Loulé, Faro and Lagos into creative hubs.
Now in its 12th edition, the festival produced by cultural association casaBranca presents a compelling reflection on the body – its political, social, and post-human dimensions – whilst exploring how art serves as a bridge between individuals, communities, and ecosystems.
The performing arts line-up includes names such as Colette Sadler, Samir Kennedy, and Letícia Sckykry, whilst the music programme features Rafael Toral, Panos Alexiadis, MMMD, Guilherme Curado, and Not Binary Code.
In the visual arts, Giacomo Micelli presents an installation where AI generates an infinite conversation between philosopher Slavoj Žižek and filmmaker Werner Herzog.
The Rhythm of Unstable Matter
Faro’s Gama Rama gallery presents A Cadência Insular: O Ritmo da Matéria Instável (Insular Cadence: The Rhythm of Unstable Matter), an exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Joana R. Sá.
“Inspired by the fluidity and instability of internal and external landscapes, Joana R. Sá constructs a visual discourse that oscillates between presence and absence, between trace and void.

Her artistic practice is based on drawing as a matrix, whilst incorporating multiple languages and media, challenging the very materiality of the work,” says the gallery.
A visual and conceptual exploration that intersects memory, rhythm and territory, the exhibition is on display until 26 April.
Colourama
Fine photography gallery In the Pink, in Loulé, presents Colourama, an exhibition that brings together the works of Dutch-German artist Johnny Mae Hauser and Portuguese photographer Teresa Freitas, two artists whose distinct visual languages celebrate a deep sensitivity to colour.
On show from April 10, this exhibition offers an immersive journey through their individual but complementary perspectives, with Freitas’ work displayed on the ground floor and Hauser’s on the gallery’s first floor.
In her first exhibition in Portugal, Johnny Mae Hauser presents photographs from her ‘Bildnis’ series, made up of abstract self-portraits that focus on the connection between emotional memory and everyday objects.
Meanwhile, Teresa Freitas presents her ‘Cinematica’ series, in which she blurs the boundaries between digital aesthetics and nostalgia, often characterised by soft pastel tones and, in this exhibition, vibrant greens.
Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival
From May 6 to 11, the Pine Cliffs Resort will host the 8th Algarve Smooth Jazz Festival for the fourth year running.
