Flowering Torches
To mark Easter Sunday, on March 30, São Brás de Alportel will be filled with flowers in a celebration where torches are raised to the rhythm of Catholic tunes.
The programme starts at 9.30am with the opening of the streets for the flower carpet, followed by a handicraft exhibition.
In the afternoon, the churchyard of the Igreja Matriz hosts a meeting of sounds and flavours with folk music shows where you can sample regional sweets and snacks, including the typical São Brás almonds.

Spring awakening
On March 13, the Monte Velho retreat centre in Carrapateira is hosting “a journey to rediscover the unique power of the individual”.
For four days, participants are invited to embark on a journey that promises to be transformative, breaking down internal barriers to expand individual potential. Yoga, Mindfulness, Breathwork, Somatic Movement, Dance and Trauma Healing classes will be part of the activities.
The idea is to renew your spirit, connect with yourself, free yourself emotionally and let yourself be guided by experienced people with a passion for this field who will help you awaken your inner self.
Contraband Festival
Between April 4 and 6, Alcoutim pays homage to the history of smuggling between Portugal and Spain along the Guadiana River.
This family-friendly event full of entertainment, food and drink is ideal for all ages and for those who want to have fun as well as learn.
The festival, which takes place every two years, highlights the region’s cultural and historical legacy that makes up the local heritage. As well as staged activities, there is also a recreated rural market where you can buy antique handicrafts and experience traditional street art.
